It was a packed house at Washington on Thursday as the Pam Pack track and field team hosted Southside, Riverside Northside and Matamuskeet in what served as a primer for next week’s Coastal Conference and Four Rivers Conference championship meets.
Looking to rebound from a marginal last effort, the Pam Pack snapped back on Thursday as the boys’ team took first with 170.5 points, placing ahead of Southside (68), Riverside (51.5), Northside (21) and Mattamuskeet (12).
In the girls’ meet, Riverside looked strong as it racked up 68 points to take first and was trailed by Washington (46) and Northside (41). Both the Southside girls and Mattamuskeet girls did not participate in Thursday’s meet.
For Washington coach Jon Blank, the meet was an encouraging one.
“I was really proud of the kids today. Our last meet was not great but I felt like we came out pretty strong and with the right focus,” Blank said. “We got out there and fought and battled in a lot of races.”
Looking to prepare for next Wednesday’s Four Rivers Conference meet, Seahawks coach DeWayne Kellum wanted his team to face some stiff competition and he was pleased with the way his team responded.
“We posted some good times. We needed some good competition and with Washington being a 3-A school we knew it would push us,” Kellum said. “I was real pleased.”
The Pam Pack boys were led by Stevie Green, who captured first in the 110-meter hurdles (15.70), high jump (5’8”) and teamed up with Jarquez Keyes, Wante Smallwood and Devonta Corprew to win the 4×100 (44.62).
Karim Topping took first in the long jump (20’9”) and the triple jump (42’3”) for the Pack, while Tarahje Burke won the 300 hurdles (42.5), Jaquez Columbus was first in the discuss (118’7”), Victory Santos won the 3200-meter run (12:03) and Jarquez Keyes was tops in the 200-meter dash (22.84).
In the relays, Washington’s Daquan Daniels, Corprew, Burke and Myron Brooks ran a 1:34.59 to win the 4×200 and Willie Smith, Rian Freeman, Santos and Phillip Peaden teamed up to win the 4×800 (9:17).
Southside senior Cole Kellum powered the Seahawks as fought off a pulled back muscle to take first in the 400-meter dash (53.04) and combined with Aaron Jones, Isaiah Moore and Leevonte Grimes to win the 4×400-meter relay (3:39.23).
“Our 4×4 team was really strong today,” Kellum said. “Our handoffs were like clockwork.”
Tyrone Jordan sped his way to first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10:21 for Southside, while Aaron Jones took gold in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:10.00.

In the girls’ meet, Washington’s Caitlyn Hales, Shaneen Midgette, Dajah Smith and Zandria Edwards won the 4×100 with a time of 55.00 and placed second in the 4×200 (2.00).
