Washington falls to SCHS

WINTERVILLE — A Pam Pack sixth-inning rally was not enough to get past South Central on Tuesday as Washington fell 5-3 in a Coastal Conference matchup.
Trialing 5-0 heading into the top of the sixth, the pesky Pam Pack was able erase the zero from the scoreboard when Dustin Moore reached base and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Washington tacked on another run when Greg Squires came up with a two-out RBI and would later score on another wild pitch to cut the lead to 5-3.
“Number one, we were able to get guys on base; a couple of the guys drew walks,” Washington coach Ryan Whitney said of the rally. “It was one of those things that had a snowball effect that we were able to take advantage of. I felt like it woke us up a little bit and gave us an opportunity to get back in the game.”
That it did, but Washington could not come up with another rally in the seventh as the Falcons closed out the game up 5-3.
Devon Van Cura pitched all seven innings for Washington and yielded 10 hits and five runs.
“I thought he threw the ball fairly well,” Whitney said. “There were a couple of hits we’d like to have back on some 0-2 counts … but he gave us an opportunity and kept us in the game and that’s all you can ask.”
Washington will return to action at 7 p.m. tonight as it plays its season finale at home against West Carteret on a night where the Pam Pack will honor seniors Dustin Moore, Chase Baynor, Christian Lambert and Greg Squires and hand out the Watkins award.
As Whitney concludes his second year at the helm for Washington he said he greatly appreciated the contributions made by his senior class.
“They mean a lot. Those guys are laying the groundwork for what hopefully leads to us turning around the program and getting the program back to where it was at one time,” Whitney said. “We’ve had some bumps here there like everybody does but I’m very proud of those four guys. They’re very selfless in a lot of ways and very much as concerned for the team as they are themselves.
“I’m really proud of them. For me as a new coach coming in they could have given up last year and they could have given up this year and they didn’t. The fact that we couldn’t send them out with a better season breaks my heart but I hope one day I get the opportunity to let them know how much they have meant to me this year.”
