Beginning Monday and continuing until May 20, the Beaufort County Water Department-Northside will temporarily change the disinfectant used in its water-treatment process.
This will affect county water customers located on the north side of the Pamlico River and customers located off Whichard’s Beach Road.
As part of state-required regular maintenance, BCWD-NS will use free chlorine rather than chloramines, a mixture of chlorine and ammonia, as the disinfectant. Additional hydrant flushing also will take place during this period.
Some customers may notice a slight increase of chlorine taste or odor. Cloudiness or discoloration also may appear. These changes are normal and will clear after a short period. People and businesses that take special precautions to remove chloramines from tap water, such as dialysis centers, medical facilities and aquatic pet owners, should continue to take the same precautions during the temporary switch from chloramines to free chlorine.
