A drug deal for one Greenville man ended with $4,000-worth of heroin seized by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit.

Around 6 p.m. Wednesday night, drug unit investigators arrested Megueil Dewayne Gardner, 42, of Dickerson Avenue in Greenville, charging him with heroin trafficking.

According to Capt. Russell Davenport, the drug unit received information about someone delivering heroin from the Greenville area. Armed with that knowledge, investigators picked up surveillance on the suspect on U.S. Highway 264 West near Wharton Station Road then pulled the blue Dodge Charger over on VOA Road near the Pitt County line, he said.

Investigators found 20 bundles of heroin in the vehicle, along with liquid methadone 17 packages of Suboxone sublingual strips and a package of intravenous needles. The liquid methadone, used to treat narcotics addiction, was prescribed to a name other than Gardner and was found in the trunk of the vehicle, investigators said. The Suboxone strips, which dissolve under the tongue, are also used to treat opioid dependency.

The street value of the bundles — small rolls made of 10 wax paper bindles and held together with rubber bands — is altogether $4,000. Each bindle represents a dosage of heroin in powder form that would sell for $20.

Davenport said the drugs will be sent to the SBI’s lab for analysis and confirmation that the substance is, indeed, heroin.

According to law enforcement officials, much of the heroin traffic in Beaufort County originates from Greenville. Gardner was charged with trafficking in heroin by possession, trafficking in heroin by transportation, possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule III (suboxone), possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule II (liquid methadone) and possession of drug paraphernalia. Gardner was incarcerated at the Beaufort County Detention Center, his bond set at $220,500.
