Mrs. Peggy Carawan Walker, age 84, a resident of Cypress Shores Dr., Washington, NC, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 2:00 PM at First Christian Church, Washington, NC officiated by Rev. Chad Penhorwood. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Doug Boyd, Leslie “Skeet” Cox, Joe Deveaux, Dean Leffleman, Christopher Walker and James Walker, III will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 11, 2013 one hour prior to the service in the upper gathering area.

Peggy  was born in Plymouth, NC on October 7, 1928 daughter of the late Rueben and Olive Norfleet Carawan but grew up in Beaufort County and was a member of the Washington High School class of 1946. She was married to Rufus “Rookie” Walker who preceded her in death. Peggy retired from the Washington Housing Authority where she had worked as an Administrative Assistant with section 8. She was a member of the Christian Women Fellowship at the First Christian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the local Red Hat Society known as the “Bodacious Babes” and a volunteer knitting group for Beaufort County Hospital Auxiliary.

Peggy is survived by her sons, Wayne Walker and wife Kathy of Woodbridge, VA and David Walker of Washington; her sister, Elaine Windley of Rocky Mount, her grandchildren, Christopher Walker and Katherine Deveaux and her great grandchildren, Emily and Allison.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Lee Walker and a sister, Molly Hollon.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to First Christian Church, 401 E. 2nd St., Washington, NC 27889.
