Airport terminal on council’s agenda

Citing the beginning of design work for the new terminal building at Warren Field Airport, the engineering/architect team for the project wants to meet with city officials to review the work completed so far on the project.
That request could result in the appointment of a City Council subcommittee to oversee the project. It’s been suggested that subcommittee include a council member, a member of the Airport Advisory Board and a city staff member, according to a memorandum from Allen Lewis, the city’s public-works director, to the mayor and council.
The council could discuss the issue during its meeting Monday.
At its Oct. 8, 2012, meeting, the council decided to build a new terminal building at the city-owned airport.
Later, the council authorized the city’s airport engineers, Talbert & Bright, to provide design and bidding services for the construction of a new terminal building at the airport. That building was destroyed by a gustnado July 1, 2012, when a severe storm system rolled through the area.
The tentative agenda calls for the council to authorize the mayor to sign a document assigning the lease of the city-owned Impressions Marketing Group building and related property to idX Corp., which is acquiring Impressions.
The building, after more than a year of negotiations between the city and Impressions, has undergone some improvements during the past year or so.
In February 2011, the city and Impressions agreed to a new five-year lease. Impressions has been leasing the building and property from the city since 2006.
The 2011 lease agreement required the city to obtain financing in the amount of $769,566 for building-improvement projects. If the city was unable to secure that financing, its obligations for improvements to the property were as follows:
• Up to $457,430 for roof replacement/repair;
• Up to $26,061 for an interior fire-protection system;
• Up to $82,800 for an exterior fire-protection system;
• Up to $100,000 for other repairs.
The council meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Council Chambers in the Municipal Building, 102 E. Second St. To view the council’s agenda for a specific meeting, visit the city’s website at www.washingtonnc.gov, click “Government” then “City Council” heading, then click “Meeting Agendas” on the menu to the right.
