OBX visitors and residents alike are encouraged to take an hour or two and visit the National Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center on Roanoke Island.  Located just west of the entry to Ft Raleigh National Historic Site, The Lost Colony, and the Elizabethan Gardens on US Hwy 64 business, the Center is free and open 9am to 4 pm Monday through Saturday and noon to 4pm on Sundays.  Above, recent visitors virtually “flew over” Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge.  The center features many interactive exhibits.  Plan to take in the Wildlife Art Expo in the auditorium, and browse Wild Things Gift Shop to purchase a reminder of your visit.  Information about summer interpretive programs on both Alligator River and Pea Island National Refuges is available atwww.fws.gov/alligatorriver/spec.html
