Now that the filing period for candidates in municipal elections in Beaufort County is under way, voters in those municipalities should start learning about the candidates.

 

An informed electorate finds itself in a better position to vote for candidates than voters who don’t bother to educate themselves about the candidates and their stands on issues. If there are candidate forums, voters should attend them and be prepared to ask questions if the forums’ formats allow that. If not, voters can always approach the candidates before or after forums and ask their questions.

 

As for the candidates, they have a responsibility to inform voters of their platforms and answer voters’ questions. By talking with voters, candidates can find out what’s important to voters and why those issues are important to those voters.

 

Some people may question the need to vote in municipal elections, but it’s local government that most directly affects the lives of voters. After all, the governing body of a city or town sets the tax rate, determines how taxpayers’ money is spent and what services to provide its residents.

 

Voters in Aurora, Bath, Belhaven, Chocowinity, Pantego, Washington and Washington Park will go to the polls Nov. 5 to elect mayors, council members, aldermen and town commissioners. Those voters should go to those polls knowing whom they are going to vote for and why they are voting for those candidates.

 

Voters, educate yourselves about the candidates so you can elect those who will best serve you and your interests.
