Before the first pitch of the day was even thrown rain had made its presence felt on the first day of the ENC Babe Ruth state softball tournament and after a brief departure it returned to wreak havoc on the second half of the day.
“We got about half the games in today,” said Greg Dority, the Washington Girls Fastpitch Softball League president. “We’re a little bit behind schedule, but the plan is (today) to go with the regular Wednesday schedule and then we will make up these games Thursday morning.”
When the action began, the East Beaufort 12U All-Stars were able to pull out a 12-7 victory over the Dare County All-Stars thanks to some hot hitting. Alexis Carawan went 2-3 for East Beaufort, while McKenzie Seiler, Savannah Slade, Logan Jefferson, Lexie Leggett, Caitlyn Johnson, Kayla Carrow and Rachel Buck each added a hit.
The East Beaufort 16U All-Stars topped Chocowinity 18-0 in their opener. The East Beaufort 14U All-Stars fell 10-0 to Camden, while the 12U All-stars lost 12-7 to Dare County.
The Washington 8U All-Stars picked up an 8-2 victory in their tourney opener against the Laurinburg All-Stars as Abby Gardner went 3-3, Savannah Hale and Olivia Paszt went 2-3, Bryan Miller went 2-2 and Lacie Campbell was 2-3 with a home run. Chloe Boyd, Erin Everette and Shalee Chrismon each added a hit.
The Washington 10U All-Stars opened their tourney with a thrilling come from behind victory against the Winter Park All-Stars. Trailing 9-7 in the fifth, a two-out, two-run triple by Mary Emma Holscher highlighted the All-Stars rally and helped fuel a 13-9 victory.
Grace Bumpass, Jordanya Whitehead, Sydney O’Neal and Holscher each went 2-3, while Savannah Craft, Kaylee Elks and Grace Paszt all added a hit.
