The Washington 10U All-Stars traded blows with the Pitt County All-Stars for six innings but in the end Pitt County was able to pull out a 14-12 pool play victory on Wednesday in the ENC Babe Ruth state tournament.
“Our team came out hitting the ball really well and we had some good pitching,” Washington coach Joey Winstead said. “But, Greenville’s bat’s got hot in the bottom of the fourth and that’s when we started going back and fourth.”
It was a seesaw game as Pitt County took a 1-0 lead before Jordanya Whitehead drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game before Sydney O’Neal drove in two runs to take a 3-1 lead in the third.
“We had a lot of good efforts and a lot of strong bats,” Winstead said.
Washington added to its lead in the fourth as the All-Stars rallied for four runs to go up 7-1, but Pitt County refused to roll over.
In the bottom of the fourth Pitt County tacked on six runs and was able to pull even with Washington on a Carson Flemming RBI single.
The rally shifted momentum over to Pitt County’s side, but Washington wrestled it back with a four-run fifth inning that put them up 11-7.
“Our girls are very resilient, they got some big hearts on them,” Winstead said. “They got a lot of drive and they hung in there.”
Pitt County would prove equally tough as they outscored Washington 7-1 over final frames to leg out a 14-12 win.
Washington got a good effort on the mound from several players on Wednesday as Savannah Craft thew four innings, while Mary Emma Holscher and Ann Taylor also threw well in the loss.
