A book signing event was held recently at Washington County Library for author Dawud Bass. Bass has family connections in Plymouth. He now resides in Florida and came to Plymouth to promote two of his books, “Chocolate Love” and “Brick City Players” which are part of a 20 book series.

Bass self-published his first two books in Plymouth and later moved to Florida to further his career.

Bass said that since he moved to Florida in 2005 he has gone on to sell 20,000 books.

“I am a big e-book author. I have been voted Author of the Month on Amazon three months in a row,” he explained.

Bass got into writing books because his god-brother Shakim Compere owns Flavor Unit Records with Queen Latifah.

“Queen Latifah used to do music but she started doing movies. By me growing up with them, I was always writing music and songs,” Bass said.

Bass said that he got writing books after seeing Latifah and Compere move into movies. A lot of  Bass’ songs had many parts to them.

“I just figured I am going to try this. I am going to try my hand at this. If they can do it, I can do it too,” said Bass.

“Chocolate Love” remains Bass’ biggest seller.

“Chocolate Love” is a romance novel about a young man who is a Rhythm and Blues singer. He is from New Jersey, and he tries to stay grounded as a person.

“He is out in California, and he has to deal with a lot of other celebrity women. He falls in love with his childhood sweetheart Dina.  Dina was married to a police officer who was abusive. So he tries to love her unconditionally,” said Bass when asked to explain some details of the plot.

Dawud, the young man in “Chocolate Love” learns the art of true love when he tries to help Dina who is struggling with drug addiction and her troubled past.

Bass mentioned that the movie rights to the book are being bought by hip-hop artist Queen Latifah.

“It is definitely in the early stages right now. We have had two meetings at her home in South Beach,” said Bass.

. Bass is the owner and CEO of ILLATAINMENT Media Group, which is described online as “a premier media consulting company specializing in filming digital commercials for startups, emerging brands and small to mid-sized businesses.”
