A woman’s work is never done. The Tarheel Civilians will show just how true that statement was when they demonstrate the chores women historically did at Historic Bath’s next Second Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free.
The live history lesson will feature women spinning wool and cleaning clothes with a washboard. The group’s collection of tools and vintage undergarments will be on display and the Tarheel Civilians will be there to explain them.
Leigh Swain, Historic Bath Site manager, said the event would also give local craftsmen an opportunity to share their wares. Vending booths will be part of the event.
Swain said most vendors will be women in order to fit the theme, “A woman’s work is never done.”
“We did make one exception,” she said, referring to a wood carver who wanted to participate.
The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources sponsors second Saturdays as a way to showcase the state’s arts, culture and heritage during the summer months.
“Historic sites are doing similar events all over the state,” Swain said.
Nearly 40 state historic sites and museums are involved in the series of summer events. Most of the events are free.
The Historic Bath site is located at 207 Carteret Street. For more information, call 923-3971. For a complete schedule of Second Saturday events, go to www.2ndSaturdaysnc.com.
