A Beaufort County man claims he’s been falsely accused by local law enforcement.
Michael Lee Hunnings, 30, of Whichards Beach Road, Chocowinity, was arrested Aug. 7, and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver a Schedule II controlled substance by investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit.
According to a press release from the drug unit, investigators conducted a controlled buy of Oxycodone from Hunnings. A spokesman for the unit said the buy was captured on audio and video.
But Hunnings denies selling the six Percocets — opioid-based prescription pain pills — for which he was charged. Hunnings said the warrant stemmed from an incident that allegedly occurred on his property four months ago.
“Supposedly there were Percocets sold,” Hunnings said. “But I didn’t do it and that’s why I don’t understand why they say they’ve got it on audio and video,” Hunnings said.
Hunnings was arrested and released under a $1,500 unsecured bond. He said his day in court is set for December.
With Diversion Investigator Greg Rowe, whose position was created specifically to halt the sale, distribution and abuse of prescription pain medication in Beaufort County, the drug unit has been cracking down on prescription meds abuse, said the release.
Of the controlled buy for which Hunnings was charged, a spokesman for the drug unit responded: “We have it on audio and video, so we feel very confident about the strength of the case. We don’t expect people to give us confessions — that’s why we build strong cases.”
