Washington Giants coach Brian Jones wasn’t quite sure what to expect from his team on opening day of the Community Youth Football League, but he liked what he saw on Saturday as his Giants topped the Washington Colts 20-8 on Saturday in a 10U division contest at Kugler Field.
“It was a good one for a season opener,” Jones said. “We found some football players today. We have 18 kids on the team. About a third have never played a down, a third have played and are working on their fundamentals and then we have a third that are pretty sound and everybody’s coming along.”
The Giants looked strong early as David Vincent rushed for three first half touchdowns to lift the Giants past the Colts.
“David Vincent is a workhorse,” Jones said. “He put our offense on his back today and scored three touchdowns. There’s no quit in him. He’s a hard runner and a hard worker at practice. And, our offensive line did a really good job blocking for him.”
The Colts gave a sound effort in the loss, and played even with the Giants in the second half.
“I was very proud of our boys,” Colts assistant coach Rick Anderson said. “We got a lot of kids that have never played football before and they made a lot of progress, especially in the last week of practice. I’m just really proud of them. They did a good job.”
After falling behind 6-0, the Colts answered in the second quarter with a scoring drive that was highlighted by a long run by Joshua White that gave the team a first down inside the Giants 10-yard line. Shortly after, Gray West rumbled into the end zone from 8 yards out to tie the game at six. Sam Vansant would score on the ensuing two-point conversion to give the Colts a 10-8 lead with 5:21 remaining in the first half.
The Giants reclaimed the lead later in the quarter as Vincent took a handoff and darted into the end zone from 15 yards away to go up 13-8.
The Giants expanded their lead to 20-6 thanks to a critical defensive stop late in the second half that gave the offense the ball back for one last chance to score before halftime.
With the ball at their own 30 and 19 seconds left in the half, Washington marched down the field on two handoffs to Vincent, with the last one being a 35-yard touchdown run that led to a 20-8 advantage.
