Mr. Walton Edmunson “Walt” Swain, age 89, a resident of 103 N. Wedgewood Dr., Washington, died Sunday, September 22, 2013 at his home.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the First Christian Church and will be conducted by Dr. Michael Price. Burial will follow in the Long Acre Chapel Christian Church Cemetery. David Swain, Mickey Swain, Ben Sheppard, Johnny Swain, Lance Bass and David Hall will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Swain was born in Washington County on September 16, 1924 to the late Paul and Vida Midyette Swain. On June 2, 1950 he married Matilda Anne Bowen who survives. Mr. Swain honorably served in the United States Navy and was the last appointed postmaster in North Carolina by Walter B. Jones. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Trinity Sunday School Class, VFW Post 6088 of Washington, American Legion Post 0015 for 62 years, Original Washington Lions Club and was past President of the North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Postmasters (NAPUS). Survivors include his wife Matilda “Tillie” B. Swain of the home, one son, Richard “Rick” Swain and wife Anita of Plymouth, two granddaughters, Ashley S. Mason and husband Brett, Mallori B. Swain and friend Barrett Marshall, one great grandchild, Allen Mason, three brothers, Lee Tom Swain and wife Mary Alice of Plymouth, Ernest Swain and wife Kay of Louisiana, Mike Swain and wife Marlene of Alaska, Paula Bass and husband Standley of Spring Hope, Jane Everton and husband Jay of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Lois Smith and husband Ronnie of Ahoskie, Lorna Sheppard and husband Billy of Belhaven, two sister’s in law, Lillian Swain of Plymouth, Jackie S. Swain of Plymouth and one Godchild, Todd Jones and wife Nan and his children, McCrea and Champ of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Gay, Sonya Hardison, and two brothers, J.D. Swain and Eddie Swain.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home.
