From the Humane Society of Beaufort County

 

As of the end of August 2013, the Humane Society of Beaufort County had spent its budgeted amount of $40,000 for assisting with the cost of spaying and neutering cats and dogs in Beaufort County. The need arises when residents can’t afford all or a portion of the fee for the operation. For the past two years, the Humane Society has subsidized the cost of every animal adopted from the shelter resulting in increased adoptions from our local Shelter. It is the mission of the Society to reduce the number of unwanted animals by helping residents of Beaufort County with the cost of spaying or neutering their pet.

It is apparent that the efforts of the Humane Society are showing positive results.  The Society assists the Betsy Bailey Nelson Animal Control Facility of Beaufort County, aka the Shelter, in their common interests of protecting the welfare of animals in our community and addressing the major problem of over population of cats and dogs. The year-to-date shelter statistics show that the rate of pet adoptions is up dramatically. At the end of August 2013, year-to-date, there were 703 pet adoptions with a percentage rate of 38 percent. For the same time period in 2012, there were 436 pets adopted with a percentage rate of 23 percent.

Although the adoption rate is up for this year, there are still far too many good, healthy and quality cats and dogs being euthanized. The Humane Society is making an appeal to the citizens of Beaufort County to help with this funding shortfall.  Here’s how you can help: make a contribution to help defray the cost of the upcoming Humane Society annual auction; make a contribution to the Humane Society Beaufort County; become a member of the Humane Society Beaufort County; make a reservation to attend the annual live auction, which is always a delicious and fun evening.
