Plymouth looks to extend streak; Cougars try to snap skid

Both Northside and Southside will sit Week 6 out as the two schools have a bye tonight, but Plymouth and South Creek will punch the clock when they take on Columbia and Farmville Central, respectively.
The Seahawks went into the off week on a positive not as the they downed Spring Creek 20-7 in Week 5 to pick up their first win of the season.
The Panthers on the other hand, were not as fortunate, as they fell 43-6 to Edenton.
The Vikings, winners of four straight, will look to keep their hand hot going tonight when they travel to Columbia to play their first Atlantic Conference game of the season, while the Cougars, who are coming off of a bye week, will attempt to snap a three-game skid tonight at home.
Here’s a look at the matchups:
Plymouth (4-0) at Columbia (2-2) at 7:30 p.m.
With the Vikings 36-23 victory over Camden last week Plymouth not only upped its record to 4-0, but extended a winning streak that dates back to last season’s championship run to 17 games.
“I think we have the second-longest winning streak in the state,” Plymouth coach Robert Cody said. “Havelock is number one with 18. After we lost to Edenton (last year) we won 13 straight and four this season.”
The Vikings 17th win was a hard fought one.
“It was a good win. Camden is a good team, I don’t care what there record is,” Cody said. “They’re record (1-4) might not look that good but they had some big backs and really pounded the football.”
Plymouth’s back may not be big in size but they routinely come up with big plays as Chad Dance ran for two touchdowns and QB Malik Webb rushed for another.
Webb, a junior first-years starter, has continued to impress his coach.
“He’s tough. He is beginning to play good and once he starts to learn he’s going to be really good,” Cody said. “He’s one of the best athletes I’ve ever coached.”
Tonight, Webb and Co. will look to lead the Vikings to their first conference victory of the season when they square off against Columbia.
“It’s big, you always want to make sure you win that first conference game,” Cody said. “Right now my big thing is we have 10 games, and we want to win them all and try and get that No. 1 seed. That’s a big goal and if we stay healthy and do what we have to do then maybe we can get there.”
Farmville Central (4-0) at South Creek (1-3) at 7:30 p.m.
After topping Perquimans 30-13 in Week 1, South Creek has struggled to get back in the win column as it has lost three straight with its last one being a 56-6 defeat at the hands of Northside in Week 4.
In other words, last week’s bye came at a perfect time.
“We worked on getting healthy,” South Creek coach Jeremy Jones said. “We spent some time on conditioning and did a few drills each day, but we really tried to get some of the guys that were banged up healthy. We really didn’t have many bodies left by the time we were done with Northside.”
There was some light at the end of the tunnel during the Panthers game as the Cougars saw the return of starting QB Brandon Battle, who did not play quarterback during the first three games due to a hand injury. The only catch was that Battle was thrust into the game when replacement QB Aaron Little got hurt.
As the Cougars return to action tonight, Jones said he will have both players back at their normal positions, with Battle playing quarterback and Little playing wideout.
“Brandon’s back in. Aaron got some valuable reps at quarterback that he would not have gotten otherwise, which is big for him and us because he knows what to do if he has to go back in there,” Jones said. “Aaron will now be back at receiver, which gives us some more bodies at that position.”
South Creek faces a stiff test in its return as it will host an undefeated 2-A Farmville Central (Eastern Plains) team.
“They are 4-0 but on the flip side their combined opponents’ records are 1-18. Not that we greatly enhance their opponents’ win percentage,” Jones said. “They’re athletic and they key off of people’s mistakes. That’s really how they’ve been winning. They’ve been in tight ball games, but (after a mistake) they will opening it up and run away with it. They don’t turn the ball over.”
Jones said he expects the Jaguars to run a ground and pound style offense, making the Cougars’ run defense critical tonight.
“We just have to put as many bodies up front as we can,” Jones said. “We gamble a lot as far as the passing game goes because we got some pretty good athletes on the backside, but we got to put eight bodies up by the football or we’re never going to stop the run.”
