CHOCOWINITY — It looks like a little rest did the trick. After sitting out last week with a bye, the Seahawks stormed back into action on Friday with an explosive 52-19 homecoming victory over South Creek.
The win was the second straight for the Southside (2-4, Coastal Plains), who rushed for 397 yards and eight touchdowns to score a season-high 52 points.
The Seahawks started their 2013 campaign with four straight losses, but are hoping that with two straight wins that they are now headed in the right direction.
“This really was a key game for us,” said Southside coach Jeff Carrow. “We had a slow start to the year, but we have spent the last two weeks trying to come together as a team and a family and for the first time this year we played as a solid team.”
Running back Donshae Miller led the charge as he rushed for two touchdowns, while Isaac Harrell, John Sullivan, Lawrence Brown, Dylan Lewis and Joe Myers each reached the end zone.
While everything seemed to go right for the Seahawks, the same could not be said for South Creek (1-5, Two Rivers), who lost its fifth straight game.
The Cougars botched a punt attempt on their first possession, giving Southside the ball at the South Creek 20, and shortly after Harrell rumbled into the end zone from six yards out for a 6-0 lead.
The Seahawks would go on to score on its first four possessions of the game to expand their lead to 26-0 before South Creek answered with an 83-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Battle to Romalik Parker with 3:36 left in the first half.
“We weren’t making stops in the first half, that’s a killer,” South Creek coach Jeremy Jones said. “We had three or four play drives and then couldn’t convert our punts.”
Southside would add one more score before the end of the half as it went on a 5-play, 50-yard drive that ended on a Miller 12 yard TD run to take a 33-7 halftime advantage.
In the second half it was more of the same as South Creek fumbled on its first possession, setting up a 4-yard TD run by Lewis, before an Isaiah Moore interception led to Jones TD run.
Southside would add one more score in the fourth on a Joe Myers 12-yard score, while South Creek tallied 13 points on two Markel Farmer TD runs.
