GREENVILLE — A two-touchdown performance by Greenville Titans White quarterback LeShawn Atchinson proved to be the difference in the Titans 12-0 win over the Washington Saints in a Community Youth Football League 10U division battle on Saturday at J.H Rose High School.
Atchinson, who also had an interception, rushed for a four-yard score in the second quarter before breaking off a breathtaking 53-yard touchdown run in the fourth to up the Titans record to 2-2.
“He’s our stud, there’s no doubt about it,” Titans coach Brian Jacobs said. “He’s football acumen is very high and plus he has the speed to match. We depend on him a great deal and he stepped it up today and made plays.”
After falling behind 6-0 in the second, the Saints (1-3) played even with the Titans for a majority of the game. Washington moved the ball well behind running backs Terry Moore and Eniyjhah Purvis but just could not get across the goal line against a stiff Titans defense.
“We were in the game until right there at the end,” Saints coach Ray Pippin said. “… I think our defense held strong the whole game. We recovered some fumbles today and were able to get some turnovers. I was real pleased with the play of our corners and linebackers.”
The Saints had their chances in the second half as they pieced together a lengthy drive late in the third quarter as the tandem of Moore and Purvis brought them down to the Titans 22-yard line. However, Washington could not convert on a crucial fourth-and-three.
With five minutes left in the fourth, the Saints came up with a key stop on defense and drove down to the Titans 35-yard line, but would not get any further as the Greenville defense rose to the occasion.
On the ensuing possession, Atchinson put the game out of reach as he raced down the right side line, zigzagging around defenders for a 53-yard score to go ahead 12-0 with :38 left in the game.
