5K raises $2K for Blounts Creek

The Save Blounts Creek 5K Run/Walk held Oct. 20 raised $2,000 to support the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation’s legal efforts to save Blounts Creek from the effects Martin Marietta’s proposal to dump 12,000,000 gallons of fresh water into the brackish creek.
According to organizers, the 5K race was very successful and well received.
“They did a very good job with it,” said Harrison Marks, executive director of PTRF. “All the credit goes to them.”
Many participants from Beaufort and surrounding counties braved the brisk temperatures in order Washington resident Charlene Wickham recorded the fastest time on the 3.1-mile course in 23 minutes and 36 seconds. The course ran along Blounts Creek from Cotton Patch Landing & Marine through the Campground on Blounts Creek and by the Bay Harbour Community entrance. Other first place finishers were Alicia Speedy, Elizabeth Brown, Chris White, Glinda Hill, Jay Wickham and Mark Smith. The overall winner in the walking category was Ed Stafford with a time of 40 minutes and 48 seconds and the fastest female walker was Gloria Stafford with a time of 40 minutes and 53 seconds.

Members of Bay Harbour Community, Crisp Landing and other volunteers provided support throughout the race. Cotton Patch Landing & Marine, owned by Jimmy and Pam Daniels, was especially generous in covering the costs of the Save Blounts Creek t-shirts and printing and delivery as well as providing the venue for the start/finish, registration, and post-race ceremonies.
