CHOCOWINITY — The Washington Dolphins made waves in their regular season finale as they ran for three scores and threw for another to top the Chocowinity Indians 28-6 to clinch the regular season championship in the 12U division of the Community Youth Football League on Saturday at the Chocowinity Rec Complex.
Dolphins quarter Jack Baltz scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Chris Mills in the second, while Tre Carter ripped off a 35-yard TD run and Kaleb Davis scored from 45 yards out in the third to close out the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record.
“My boys came out to play, they haven’t played like this all year,” Washington coach Mike Nichols said. “They really stepped up today.”
The Indians (4-2) came out and gave a gutsy effort for four quarters and were able to score in the second when Xavier Simmons rumbled into the end zone from three yards out to cut the deficit to 14-6.
However, the Chocowinity offense suffered a setback in the second quarter when star running back Jamari Nelson was forced to leave the game with an injury.
“It took us a little while to get going, (Washington) has a good team,” Chocowinity coach Jonathan Kassanove said. “We had our first string tailback get hurt and that caused us to make some major transitions in the backfield. That really changed our whole offense.”
With the playoffs set to begin next weekend, Kassanove said he would not let his team dwell on the loss.
“I told them come Monday when we come to practice it’s a whole new season,” Kassanove said. “Everybody’s record is 0-0 and from there you can win and move on or lose and go home.”
