With two new lieutenants at the helm, the local Salvation Army’s annual banquet had a different focus from last year.
“We recognized individuals this year,” said Lt. Goldie Rabun.
Service awards went to Greg Cicci, Kathy Powell, Cynthia Jones and Carolyn Walker for their food and/or monetary contributions.
The Salvation Army’s Washington unit also honored Buddy Harris and Melissa Nanney for their good deeds.
Rabun was impressed by the generosity of those invited to this year’s banquet.
“Just the giving hearts of all the people who attended, their willingness to give,” she said.
After the banquet, the generosity continued. Many in attendance left with angels from the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree. They also purchased honor cards.
The honor cards are gift options for the holiday season that lets the recipient know a donation has been made in his or her name. Rabun said 100 percent of proceeds from the $5 cards stay in Beaufort County to help the local Salvation Army’s efforts.
“Right now, our biggest need is for food and for Christmas toys,” she said. “We’re still in desperate need for people to adopt 150 angels.”
The gifts should remain under $30. Rabun said she doesn’t want any child to go without shoes or a coat while another receives an iPod.
Maj. James Seiler from the Salvation Army’s divisional headquarters was the guest speaker at last week’s banquet.
His statements hit home for Rabun.
“In today’s economy, we have seen more middle class Americans than ever needing first-time help,” she said.
