With the win, the regular season champion Panthers finished the year with a perfect 7-0 record.
“It’s been a great season,” Panthers coach Keith Mitchell said. “The kids have done a great job at practice, and today they did a great job of executing.
“We played the Eagles two weeks ago and they played us hard and today they did a great job against us. All the credit to the Eagles.”
The Eagles finished the year with a 4-3-1 record and gave a strong effort in their season finale.
“We played very good on defense, but on offense we just had trouble blocking,” Eagles coach Greg Warren said. “I’m proud of these kids. They played tough. … It’s been a fun season. We had a good group of guys and I hope they all play again next year.”
The Panthers were able to take an 8-0 lead in the first quarter when Jonathan Fields ran for a 6-yard score and scored the ensuing two-point conversion at the 2:41 mark in the first.
The two teams would slug it out for the next three quarters before another touchdown was scored.
The Panthers recovered an Eagles fumble at midfield in the middle of the third quarter and constructed a lengthy drive that spanned into the fourth quarter and ended when quarterback Dawson Mitchell scored on a 3-yard bootleg run.
“The Eagles seemed to be penetrating pretty hard so we wanted to go backside on them,” Mitchell said. “Dawson turned the corner and made a good cut up the middle.”
It appeared the Panthers were going to score earlier on a Fields run but a hard-hitting tackle by Larry Ebron and a penalty kept the TD off the board.
With a two-score lead, the Panthers, who allowed only two touchdowns all season, locked down on the Eagles.
“The defense has played hard all year,” Mitchell said. “I’ve told the kids all year that offense can win games, but defense wins championships and that’s what it’s done for us this year.”
