CHOCOWINITY — Well known performers in the fields of gospel, country and bluegrass music are among the entertainers who will take to the stage of Tar Heel Variety Theater in 2014.

Among those already booked to appear are Bill Anderson (Feb. 8), Jason Crabb (March 1) Ronnie McDowell (April 5), Ivan Parker (May 24 and Billy “Crash” Craddock (Oct. 4). Also appearing at the Chocowinity theater will be The Isaacs (Jan. 25), the Malpass Brothers (Feb. 14), Keith Henderson and his Elvis tribute (May 3) and Dailey & Vincent (May 31), according to Angie Lewis, whose family owns and operates the theater.

But that’s just a few shows of what will eventually be a full year of entertainment, Lewis promised.

“We’re still adding,” she said. “We’re still calling and making plans.”

A highlight of the first few months of performances will be the Valentine’s Day dinner and show featuring the Malpass Brothers, a Goldsboro-based family act that performs traditional country and honky-tonk favorites. The brothers have appeared in concerts throughout the United States, sometimes as opening act for country legend Merle Haggard.

While tickets are being sold for individual shows, about 60 theaters members pay one fee which allows them to attend each and every show the Tar Heel stages throughout the year.

Lewis said she is excited about the upcoming shows for the new year.

“I think it’s going to be something for everyone,” she said. “We’ll have all types of music … southern gospel, bluegrass, classic country and contemporary gospel..”

Even with all the various genres of music presented on the local stage, there is one constant that the Lewis family insists on preserving.

“It’s family oriented, no matter what age you are,” Lewis said. “This is a Christian-run theater so it’s always going to be good, clean entertainment.”

The theater, with a seating capacity of around 600, opened its doors almost 12 years ago. The facility is located at 485 Carrow Road just off N.C. Highway 33 west of Chocowinity.
