The Washington Swim team preserved their unbeaten home record on Saturday after a huge victory against East Carteret and Northside.

The Pam Pack girls’ team collected 130 points to East Carteret’s 78 and Northside’s 38, while the men’s team won by an even bigger margin with 191 points.

“We had a lot of really good swims today,” said Head Coach Spencer Pake. “They’re working really hard at practice and it’s paying off for a lot of these kids.”

Megan Baldwin had a career day, breaking the Washington school record in the girls’ 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.79. The win was a testament to Baldwin’s character and skill. She never swam the 100 yard backstroke and was inserted into yesterday’s race by Pake, who wanted to see what she could do. Baldwin came through with a decisive victory and picked up another individual win in the 50 yard freestyle as well for the Pam Pack.

“Today felt great and I’m really proud of everyone,” said Baldwin. “We worked really hard for it. I’m glad it went the way it did.”

Standout swimmer Kevin Andrews also added another record to his stockpile in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 1:09.21. Andrews outswam Washington’s Tony Lovenbery, the second place finisher, by eight seconds.

“I like having records,” said Andrews. “For me, it’s not too hard to break records, I’ve gotten kind of used to it lately.”

“He broke it earlier in the season then one of his teammates broke it again. But then he wanted it back, so he went and had a very good swim,” said Pake. “I’m very pleased with it. It’s going to be fun to play with when it comes to regionals and states and what these kids are going to swim.”

Washington secured victories in all but one of the relays they participated in. The Pam Pack defeated East Carteret and Northside in the boy’s and girl’s 200 yard medley relay, the boy’s 200 yard freestyle relay, the boy’s 200 yard freestyle relay and the girl’s and boy’s 400 yard freestyle relay.

Other Washington wins included Eric Lovenberg in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.34 and the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:17.86, Robert Sandy in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.13 and Chandler Beach in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 6:39.60.

“Right now we have a couple more home meets left. We’re focusing really on regionals, which is Feb. 1,” said Pake. “We want to get as many qualified for the state meet as we can at regionals. That’s really where our focus is now, getting in shape and getting to a championship level.”

Pake’s team as two meets before regionals begin on Feb. 1. The Pam Pack face off against D.H. Conley and Croatan on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
