The Lady Storm of the girls 8-10 Washington rec basketball league defeated the Lady Dream on Wednesday, 19-9.
“I thought the team played really well, they’ve been playing really well all season,” said coach Franz Holscher.
Point guard Kathleen Slade controlled the offensive tempo early, showing her range by drilling a deep two to start the first quarter. Her counterpart, guard Mary Emma Holscher, served as the second piece in the tandem offensively, as well as defensively.
The duo forced turnovers from the Dream guards and held their opponent scoreless in the first quarter. Ka’ltyah O’Neal and Lilly Davis maintained a strong offensive presence inside the paint as well, resulting in a commanding 11-3 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Dream charged back, led by Sidney Selby’s six points, but it wouldn’t enough.
Holscher continued to convert turnovers into points and play great transition basketball. She would end with three buckets on the night. O’Neal led her team in scoring with seven points.
“At the beginning of the year we sort of had two or three leaders, Ka’ltyah, Mary Emma and Kathleen, but what we’ve been working on since the very beginning is to round out the team and we’re starting to do that,” said Holscher. “Those three are playing mainly guard positions. They’re all starting to understand the concept of team basketball and that’s great.”
The Dream will play the Sky on Saturday at 1 p.m., while the Storm will try to improve to 5-0 against the Sparks on Wednesday.
