The Lady Mercury of the girls 11-14 Washington rec basketball league squeaked out a victory against the Lady Mystics, 35-29, to remain undefeated.
“We had to do a lot of work on the court. We didn’t come out like we always come out,” said Head Coach Sam Crawford. “Otherwise, we found a way to get it together like we’re supposed to and we started to play like a real team is supposed to play. We played a good ball club tonight.”
The Mercury struggled early, as Mystics’ guard Tierra Wiggins controlled the floor and avoided costly turnovers. Wiggins, one of the best ball-handlers on the floor, picked apart the Mercury defense, scoring nine straight points in the second quarter. She would end with 13 points on the night.
Wiggins received some help from her sister, Cierra, who dropped eight points on the night and the Mystics took a 17-15 lead into halftime.
In the second half, forward MiAsia Roberson took full control of the game, turning offensive rebounds into putbacks and overpowering the Mystics forwards. Roberson led her team in rebounds and ended with 12 points.
Cyntavea Blackledge scored a game-high 16 points and was able to knock down key free throws down the stretch.
“We still have a lot more games to go and we still have to face them again,” said Crawford. “As long as we keep doing what we’re doing, things will fall into place. I thank all the fans that came out tonight that we’re cheering for us.”
The Mystics face off against the Cougars Saturday at 2 p.m., while the undefeated Mercury try to stay perfect against the Cougars Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
