The Lady Sky of the 8-10 girls Washington Youth Basketball league defeated the Lady Dream on Saturday. 16-7.

“They’re working real hard, especially those who are playing in their first year,” said Head Coach Willie Williams. “It’s a good learning experience.”

Open looks were nonexistent, as the defense on both ends was strong through the first half. Dream forward Jamasia Burrus was a force to be reckoned with in the paint, fighting for loose balls and tie-ups. Burrus ended with just two points on the night, but managed to rack up rebounds.

The Sky held their own down low as well and allowed just five points in the first half. “They played real good defense,” said Williams. “Everybody is listening and moving around like they’re supposed to.”

After the halftime break, the Sky managed to create space on the perimeter and hit a collection of mid-range jumpers. Sky guard Kessiah Blacklidge, who finished with four points, set a nice tempo for the offense and avoided costly turnovers down the stretch. The Sky would hold the Dream to just two points in the second half and coast to victory.

Brianna Somerville led her team in scoring with six points.

The Sky and Dream have next week off and don’t play against until Jan. 26.
