Although the filing period for several local, statewide and national elections does not open until next month, some candidates have campaign-related requirements they must meet within days after announcing their candidacies.

“Once they announce that they are running, they have to come in an fill out the campaign-finance paperwork, which sets up their accounts. Usually, once they announced, they start raising money,” said Anita Bullock Branch, deputy director of the Beaufort County Board of Elections, on Monday. “So, they have to come in and set up that paperwork so they can report how they’re receiving and spending money.”

The filing period for the upcoming elections begins at noon Feb. 10 and ends at noon Feb. 28, Branch said.

Except for the state House and Senate, the filing fees for specific offices have been announced, Branch said. “We just got the exact amounts (Monday),” Branch said.

The filing fees for those offices follow:

• Clerk of court, $834;

• Sheriff, $958;

• County commissioner, $152;

• School board member, $31;

• Soil and Water Conservation Board member, $5 (filing period is in July).

Any candidate or person considering becoming a candidate who has questions about election-related matters should call the Beaufort County Board of Elections at 946-2321, Branch said. Announced candidates who have not filed the required paperwork should do so as soon as possible, Branch said.

“They need to call the office and set up an appointment with Kellie (Harris Hopkins, elections director),” Branch said.

Primaries are set for May 6. Early voting for the primaries begins April 24 and ends May 3. The general election is set for Nov. 4, with early voting in the general election beginning Oct. 23 and ending Nov. 1.
