The Mavericks of the boys 13-15 Washington Youth Basketball League followed last week’s tough loss to the Heat with a win against the Thunder on Saturday, 49-32.

“It was a good game overall. Give credit to the other team, said Head Coach James Porter, “We were at a higher skill level tonight. We’ll push forward.”

The athletically superior Mavericks team was able to hit outside jumpers early, resulting in a 13-3 swing in the first four minutes. Jevon Hagins and Notorius Griffin easily ran the floor against the Thunder’s transition defense. On offense, the Thunder had a few good looks, but had difficulty getting anything to drop.

Trevon Corpew continued to fight, scoring hard-earned baskets in the paint to give his team a fighting chance. “He’s definitely a good player,” said Porter. “His advantage was he played at this level at 12. That was definitely a plus for him tonight. “

With the Mavericks up 17-5 at half, the Thunder needed a huge comeback, one they wouldn’t get until the fourth quarter.

A few acrobatic layups from Corpew and some nice mid-range shooting from Walter Carter resulted in an 8-0 swing to begin the final quarter. However, the Mavericks answered with an 8-0 swing shortly after, sealing the victory.

The Thunder will try to redeem themselves against the Timberwolves Thursday at 7:30 p.m., while the Mavericks don’t play until next Saturday when they Timberwolves at 3 p.m.
