It’s been a back-and-forth season and a disappointing last couple of weeks for Head Coach Daniel Riggs the Washington wrestling team. On Saturday, the Pam Pack ended on a relatively high note in the Eastern Plains Conference Individual Tournament, finishing in second place overall with tournament-host North Pitt taking first.

Individually, Washington secured five first-place finishes, one second-place and six costly third-place finishes with 150 total points. North Pitt had a strong showing with 174 points, while Farmville Central ended in third with 107 points, North Johnston in fourth with 64 and Beddingfield rounded it out with 31.

Washington’s Jacob Smith, representing the Pam Pack in the 106-pound weight class, defeated Farmville’s Aaron Anderson in a 17-10 decision to win the weight class. Thomas Remick continued his dominance by pinning both his opponents in the 160-pound weight class and taking first place.

Remick’s practice partner, Devon Van Cura, kept his undefeated streak alive on a 13-3 decision over North Pitt’s Nick Wilkerson in the 170-pound weight class. Van Cura is now a perfect 31-0 heading into regionals.

Jason Gardner took home first place in the 126-pound weight class, winning 4-3 over North Pitt’s Gabe Jackson in one of the most competitive matches of the evening. Gardner has quietly managed an impressive 27-8 record overall.

Junior Kyle Krajewski rolled through the 220-pound weight class with two pins, the first against Beddingfield’s Henry Holden in just 45 seconds.

For the tournament champion North Pitt, Angel Najar, one of the area’s top wrestlers, improved to 42-0 with wins over Washington’s Chris Bohn and Farmville’s Travonyne Edwards.

Despite the good showing, Washington’s performance was not enough to solidify a playoff spot. North Pitt and Farmville Central will represent the Eastern Plains Conference today in the first round of the wrestling postseason.
