ECU men’s tennis on seven-game winning streak

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina men’s tennis team took down Georgia Southern, 7-0, Friday at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center. It was the Pirates’ seventh straight win after losing their season-opener.

ECU quickly asserted itself claiming the doubles point, winning two matches before the third finished. The ECU duo of Damien Brenard and Fredric Lehfeldt downed Albert Codina Sala and Marco Osorio 6-1 on court two, before Patreik Wolterbeek and Miles Holvoet took out Oliver Webb and Christian Kerrigan, 6-2, to clinch the point on court three. The third doubles match featuring the Pirates’ 53rd-ranked duo of Joran Vliegen and Colin Roller versus Kyle Hoffman and Rafael Racy went unfinished.

The Pirates earned three straight set wins and a trio of three-set victories to complete the sweep. The 23rd-ranked Vliegen defeated Webb 6-4, 6-4 to earn the second point of the match. Brenard rallied from a set down to beat Nico DeGroof 4-6, 6-3, 6-5 (7-1) at the No. 3 position just before Mario Martinez ousted Codina Sala 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to clinch the match on court two.

Roller defeated Hoffman on court five 6-2, 6-2; Lehfeldt outlasted Osorio at No. 4 6-5 (7-4), 5-6 (1-7), 10-7 and Blake Gregory defeated Kerrigan 6-5 (7-4), 6-4 at No. 6 to close out the match.

The Pirates return to action Sunday at 11 a.m. as they welcome James Madison to the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
