An argument on a Washington street ended with a gunshot wound to one man and the arrest of another Monday afternoon.

William Henry Bailey III, 28, of Gladden Street, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill after he allegedly shot Stefon Windell Little, of Boston Avenue.

According to Washington Police and Fire Services Director Stacy Drakeford, a 911 caller reported the shooting at the corner of Gladden and West Ninth streets at 1:17 p.m. Little was shot once with a semiautomatic pistol. The single bullet penetrated the victim’s hand before going through his hip, Drakeford said.

Little was taken to Beaufort Vidant Hospital first, then transported to Vidant Medical in Greenville for further treatment, Lt. William Chrismon, spokesman for the Washington Police Department, wrote in a press release.

Bailey fled the scene in a vehicle, Drakeford said, but it wasn’t long after the shooting that he turned himself in to Washington Police.

“Our officers did a great job of chasing down leads and in less than two hours, we had somebody identified and (Bailey) came and turned himself in,” Drakeford said.

Drakeford said the weapon used in the shooting was also recovered.

Little had just been released from prison Feb. 13, having completed a sentence for breaking and entering.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and they are working on finding a motive for shooting.

“We’re still working on that. It wasn’t random, I’ll tell you that much,” Drakeford said.

Chrismon said other charges against Bailey are pending, including possession of a firearm by a felon.

Bailey was held at the Beaufort County Detention Center without bond, awaiting his first appearance before a judge.
