Hunters’ Pointe Sporting Clays Inc. will be hosting its annual East Coast Championship March 13-16 located on Decoy Drive in Washington.

“My husband and my son were competition shooters for the National Sporting Clays,” said owner Rita Downs. “We opened this business and wanted to have a tournament we could call our own.”

Downs’ 267 square-acre property features a half-mile road strewn with various state-of-the-art, solar-powered trap-shooting courses, open farmland that will be utilized for the preliminary competition on March 13 and a pistol shooting range.

The tournament will include a 200 bird main event, a 100 bird FITASC, a make-a-break, a 5-stand competition and a 100 bird preliminary. Contestants can enter one or multiple events. Downs expects the spectacle to draw shooters from all over the country.

“We have people come from New York, Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina and all over North Carolina,” Downs said. “We’ve had as many as 300 people.”

On March 1, Hunters’ Pointe hosted the East Coast Warm-Up, where 14 hunters took to the stands in preparation for the championship.

Tournaments aside, Hunters’ Pointe is open all year to the everyday shooter and to corporate business on Mondays and Tuesdays.

It’s a sport just like golf, or fishing, and a lot of people that hunt like to shoot all year,” Downs said. “When duck season is over and you don’t have a place to shoot, this gives the averaging hunter a place where he can practice all year, instead of laying that old shotgun up in the closet.”

In 2015, Washington and Hunters’ Pointe will host The North Carolina State Skeet Shooting Championship.
