The Lady Pack stepped onto a dry diamond for the first time in a week for a make-up game against Northern Nash Friday night and finished off the Knights in five quick innings, 11-1.
Junior Haley Hutchens got the call and pitched five masterful innings, allowing just one hit and an unearned run.
“She’s pitched better, she’s pitched worse, but she got the job done tonight,” said assistant coach Wendy Godley.
Hutchens kept the ball low in the zone and forced a collection of groundballs from the Knights in the early innings. She retired nine out of the first 10 batters, as the Lady Pack bats backed her at the dish.
A walk and an error by the Knights’ right fielder plated sophomore Chrissy McKissick in the first inning. Then, the Pack exploded for three more runs in the second via a two-out rally. Hutchens helped herself and followed a pair of hits with a booming triple, plating both Chrissy McKissick and sophomore Style McKissick. Washington would tack on another run with another Knights’ error in the outfield. The four runs would be all Hutchens needed to secure the win.
“My offense did a good job today putting runs on the board and playing small ball,” Godley said.
Over the final three innings, Hutchens fanned five Knights’, bringing her strikeout total to seven. Despite her clear dominance on the rubber, the Pack bats kept on producing. Three hits and four walks in the third inning chalked up another seven runs for Washington, activating the mercy rule.
“I felt like the offense performed great, and I feel like this is going to be a good rest of the season,” said Style McKissick.
The Lady Pack hit the road on Tuesday to face Southwest Edgecombe.
