On March 7, 2014 Columbia High School’s SASI, Student Athlete Summer
Institute, traveled to Tyrrell County Elementary School to participate
in Read Across America in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. SASI members
dressed up as Dr. Seuss book characters and entered the Kindergarten
classes. There they talked to TES students on the importance of
education, reading and sportsmanship. The SASI members read a Dr.
Seuss book to each class and then completed an arts and crafts
project. By the end of the project each student was dressed up as a
Dr. Seuss character. All students and staff who participated in the
event enjoyed themselves.
The SASI club would like to personally thank TES Kindergarten teachers
for allowing us to join them for Read Across America.
“SASI stands for Student Athlete Summer Institute. Every year four
high school athletes who demonstrate leadership skills are chosen to
attend a conference with their SASI coach at ECU. There they meet
other SASI schools and learn about sportsmanship, leadership, healthy
decisions and other vital topics that develop their leadership skills
in the school,” said Terry Donoghue, Health and PE Teacher at Columbia
High School
The SASI group has one community project each sports season. Read
Across America is their Spring Project.
“So far we replaced the basketball nets at the outdoor basketball hoop
at the school and at the children’s playground, at sporting events we
have PSAs about sportsmanship and we volunteered at the Hotline 5k
manning a water station,” said Donoghue.
The participating SASI students are: Johndre’ Bowser, Andre Brown,
Ashante Spruill, Lakita Basnight and Keosha White.
