CHOCOWINITY — Area youngsters with special needs and their families will celebrate during an Easter-themed Fun Day event planned for Saturday.

ACCEPT and ExCEL, two closely-knit groups that serve as advocates for children, will host the event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Chocowinity

Community Building, located near Chocowinity Middle School.

“This is a time for individuals to come and be educated on each other about a variety of different needs, and it’s an opportunity to make special memories with friends and family,” said Allison Crisp, who is an organizer of the event.

ACCEPT and ExCEL were founded so that such events could not only provide entertainment and fellowship for special needs children but also serve as a means to educate the public, according to Crisp.

Saturday’s event is the latest in a series of Fun Day activities, each provided at no cost to those in attendance. The schedule will include an Easter egg hunt, games, arts and crafts and story time. In addition, a lunch of hot dogs, chips, soft drinks and dessert will be served.

In order to prepare for the luncheon, those who plan to attend are asked to contact Crisp at 252-623-9381.

ACCEPT and ExCEL are also planning other events over the next few months, including another Fun Day on May 17, Crisp said.

“We have events that help educate on special needs so that others can understand our individuals with special needs and ‘accept’ them instead of fearing them,” she added. “ACCEPT and ExCEL are working very hard together to have more activities and programs for our community.”
