The Bath Elementary Pirates played with a chip on their shoulder during Wednesday’s 7-2-win over the P.S. Jones Demons.

Head coach Chris Alligood sent his reliable right-hander Zack Woolard to the mound to shut down the Demon’s dynamic lineup, which has been the most productive in the conference this season. For P.S. Jones, Joshua Jones toed the rubber and had his fastball and 11-5 curveball working in the first inning.

But the Pirates broke through in the second after Tanner Alligood led off with a walk and Brantley Cutler smashed a towering double to plate the first run of the game. Bath’s offensive momentum carried into the next frame, as two Pirates reached on an error by the infield and a walk. Alligood followed with a two-run-single through the gap between the third baseman and shortstop. Two batters later, Alligood found himself crossing home as well after Dustin Boseman knocked him in.

Jones was relieved by Tyler Harrell with two outs in the inning, and his replacement held the Pirates to just two hits over the next two innings.

P.S. Jones finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth via small ball. After Woolard administered a leadoff walk to Cooper Anderson, a stolen base and a beautifully-placed sacrifice bunt by Nicholas Hardison moved Anderson to third. A deep fly by Christopher Sule scored Anderson, but the Demons would need more than a run to match Bath.

Another defensive blunder, a walk and two hits, including a triple by Tanner Alligood, chalked up another three runs on the scoreboard to put Bath up 7-1.

P.S Jones would score a run in the sixth, but in the end, it wouldn’t be enough, as the team suffered its first conference loss. For Bath, Boseman finished 4-for-4 with an RBI, while Woolard went the distance, allowing just two runs and striking out four.

With the loss, the Demons drop to 10-2 (9-1 Inner Banks).
