Warmer weather is just around the corner, and Pocosin Arts is gearing up with a busy schedule.

A Summer Art Camp put on by instructors will run from June 16 to August 15 with classes including ring making, musical instruments, and 3-D art.

“This will be the first time we have offered any metals classes during Art Camp. We have this gorgeous metals facility that we are excited about that we will be using,” said Joshua Craig, program and marketing coordinator at Pocosin Arts.

Craig explained that class offerings are geared this year toward a wide audience.

“We are going to continue to do clay. Exploring textiles should be really fun as Tina Lazzarine is familiar with mixed media as a metals and textiles artist. Carol Lee will be teaching a clay animals class,” said Craig.

The Camp will run for seven sessions. Each session lasts for a week. The classes will be held in the morning or afternoon for four hours.

“All classes are 55 bucks, which is a really good deal. We are really excited about it,” said Craig.

An estimated 168 students attended last year’s Summer Art Camp across all seven weeks.

Grant funding and local businesses have helped to make the Summer Art Camp possible.

The camp will close in the August 11 to 15 session with students in the classes focusing on creating three-dimensional sculptures. Participants will have the opportunity to build, sculpt, and create while learning about artists who work in the round, with a special focus on artist Patrick Dougherty. Students will visit the NC Museum of Art to view the work of Mr. Dougherty and others.

A new website address at pocosinarts.org is helping raise awareness of other offerings at the organization.

“We have our calendar so you can see upcoming events. A slider is available on the Summer Art Camp. Various links on the website will tell you about our history and other background information,” said Craig.

Online registration is available for classes offered at Pocosin Arts.

“We have never been able to do that before. It means that people from all over eastern North Carolina can come and see what we are all about. Then if they want to they can come and sign up for a class,” said Craig.

Revamping the website has been a long process.

“Now there is a layout, design, and functionality. There is a new engine supporting this website underneath built on Word Press to help us grow and add pages,” said Craig.
