BELHAVEN — During Monday’s town council meeting in Belhaven, the town defined several issues, one of which that is said to be a major summer project.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation will be working on the original U.S. Highway 264, which includes parts of Belhaven. The highway will need base work in order to be restored to an up-to-date status. Pamlico Street has some structural issues going on under the existing pavement, according to Belhaven Town Manager Guinn Leverett.

“Things have changed since this was last done,” Leverett said. “We are talking about a major, major project.”

The restoration will exclude two segments throughout the town, both of which are the town’s responsibility: one block of Pamlico Street that stretches from the downtown traffic light at the municipal building through Front Street to Wynne’s View as well as on Main Street from the traffic light to River Forest Manor.

“That was not part of the original Highway 264,” Leverett said. “They’ve always been the town’s responsibility.”

Leverett said DOT is acknowledging they own the original Highway 264 and doing a much delayed straightening up and rehabbing of the highway. Heading up the project will be District DOT Maintenance Engineer Woody Jarvis.

“He has helped us on the DOT side,” Leverett said.

During the meeting, Don Stark, a resident, also gave a presentation about the town’s 2014 Toy Train exhibit. Stark, who heads up the project, pointed out to the council that several renovations needed to be made to the Belhaven Town Hall for an easier set up and display of the Christmas exhibit. Leverett said the council will address those requests at a time closer to the holiday season.

The council also determined that it would be finalizing its budgeting for the 2014-2015 fiscal year by its last meeting in June. The board will meet on June 9to do so.
