CHAPEL HILL — Washington High School finished the 2013-2014 academic year No. 8 overall in the Class 2-A High School Athletic Association Wells Fargo Cup Standings.

Pam Pack sports teams combined for 260 overall points, finishing 32.5 points behind seventh-place Newton-Conover.

The award recognizes the school with the top overall interscholastic athletic performance and is in its 35th year, according to the NCHSAA. Teams’ collect points by finishing in a top-eight position in state championship events.

With 615 points, Carrboro took first place and its third-consecutive 2-A cup title, as the Jaguars earned playoff points in six different sports, including a state championship in men’s dual-team tennis.

Carrboro notched 167.5 more points than the next closest competitor, N.C. School of Science and Math.

In their first year in the Eastern Plains Conference, the relegation had a noticeable and instant affect on Washington. Football and men’s soccer had strong seasons and by the end of the winter, the school ranked No. 12 in Class 2-A.

Spring sports picked up right where the latter left off, propelling the program four spots, as men’s tennis, men’s track and field and softball teams all finished first in the conference.

The top point earner was the Pam Pack girls’ soccer team, which not only finished first in the Eastern Plains, but also picked up 45 points by finishing as the state runner-up.

Washington took the Eastern Plains Conference Cup, awarded to the top overall finisher in each respective table, with 69.5 overall points, finishing 4.5 ahead of second-place Beddingfield.

With such a standout performance in their inaugural season, the Pam Pack are clear favorites to repeat as Conference Cup Champions next season.
