Washington-area residents looking to be a part of the Guinness Book of World Record have a chance to participate in something free, fun and unique tomorrow at 11 a.m.

The Hildred Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center in Washington is co-hosting The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson. Approximately 300,000 people are expected to join in the swim lesson around the globe, according to Dallace Inman, supervisor at the aquatic center. Staff at the Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center are looking for between 25 and 30 people to participate in the worldwide event.

“We don’t have the staff to do over 50 people, and my goal is about 30,” Inman said. “We would just be a small piece of that and it’s just a good idea to bring awareness to the community.

“We will only have five instructors for Friday and for safety reasons I will only be able to put one instructor with about 10 students,” Inman said.

The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson aims to bring awareness to drowning prevention. The Moore Aquatic Center staff wants local residents to expand on their knowledge of swimming and swimming safety because of the City of Washington’s location to the water, Inman said.

According to The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson website, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children age one to five years old.

Inman learned about the event from a mentor at Lions Water Adventure Park in Kinston.

“We just want people to learn how to swim since eastern North Carolina has one of the highest drowning rates in the country,” Inman said. “It’s not right and where I’m from in New York, swimming is part of the curriculum in high school.”

The record-breaking event is open to anybody who wants to be a part of it event. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult to participate in the record-breaking chance.
