On Saturday, the Kiwanis Club of Washington is hosting its 23^rd annual golf Superball Tournament at the Washington Yacht and Country Club.

The proceeds of the event directly benefit local children’s projects and scholarships to Beaufort County high school seniors.

Each of the Kiwanis Club’s four scholarships this year were worth $1,200, and were given to local seniors.

“We have one scholarship at each of the three high schools in Beaufort County,” said James Johnston, president of Kiwanis Club. “We also fund a Builders Club at P.S. Jones Middle School and the TERRIFIC Kids programs at the elementary schools.”

Builders Club provides opportunities to middle school children to serve the school and community. It also develops leaders, moral character and encourages loyalty to the school, community and nation.

TERRIFIC Kids an acronym means: Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable. The program teaches elementary students about character development, self-esteem and perseverance.

Johnston has led the Superball Tournament the last two years. In this year’s Superball Tournament, 10 teams of four will compete. Each participant paid $50 to enter the field.

A superball tournament involves all four golfers tee off and each team takes the best ball to play for the next shot.

This year, a hole-in-one at a particular hole will garner a new car from Lee Chevrolet, and there will be prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin.

This is one of three fundraisers the Kiwanis Club has annually in Beaufort County. They also host a lobster sale in November, and the Washington Christmas Parade.

“We’re just a local group of individuals that raise money for the youth of the community,” Johnston said. “We are a service-oriented organization.”

The group’s focus is changing the world, one child and one community at a time, according to their website.
