Due to the arrival of Tropical Storm Arthur early Friday morning, the City of Washington and the Town of Belhaven have postponed and cancelled many Fourth of July activities.

Beth Byrd, director of the Washington Harbor District Alliance, announced Wednesday, that all morning and afternoon activities were cancelled for Friday in downtown Washington. The evening concert featuring the band Spare Change, along with fireworks and laser light show are planned as scheduled.

“Based on the latest track we have for Arthur, it appears that the storm will be out of the area by Friday afternoon,” Byrd said. “However, if it stalls, makes an inland shift or we have infrastructure damage that would cause a safety concern on Friday, we will make the call to cancel at that time.”

Friday afternoon after Arthur is projected to pass, Byrd plans to announce, whether the events that evening are going on as planned.

“Friday at noon we are going to reevaluate what Arthur is doing, “ Byrd said. “If we have to cancel anything, it will be then.”

Washington will not have a Saturday celebration due to a scheduling conflict with the band and fireworks company.

The Belhaven 72^nd annual Independence Day celebration has changed its schedule for Thursday and Friday.

Belhaven’s celebration schedule on Thursday has been postponed until Friday. Independence Day plans are now scheduled for Saturday. Times will remain the same for all events.

“It was felt that the storm was going to start on Thursday night, and be cleared by Friday morning,” said Jeanie Budge, Belhaven town clerk.
