Music lovers will have plenty of entertainment this summer as the Pamlico Opry heads back to the Turnage Theater.

Starting this Saturday night, six different acts, along with their musical guests, will take the stage every other Saturday night through Sept. 27. The acts range from virtuoso pickers Tommy Edwards and Jack Lawrence to the punk-esque bluegrass of Washington’s Carolina Still, but according to Pamlico Opry organizer Rob Cuthrell, one thing unites them all.

“They are outstanding regional performers. And local. A lot of them have played here in the area before and were well-received,” Cuthrell said.

The first feature group of the Pamlico Opry series is The Outliers. “Bluegrass Today,” a website centered on the bluegrass and acoustic music community calls the band high level bluegrass performers, not afraid to stray beyond the bounds of the genre.

Cuthrell said the group is one of the top bluegrass bands in the North Carolina right now.

Opening for The Outliers is Stillwater — a local group that calls on branches of the family tree to fill its guitar, bass, mandolin and banjo spots. Comprised of brothers Bobby and Donny Moore, on guitar and banjo respectively, their niece Wendy Wallace on bass, and Bobby Moore’s son, Jay, on mandolin, their show truly is a family affair.

Family is part of the draw for the Pamlico Opry — Cuthrell said the shows are affordable family entertainment that showcase local musicians. The series, hosted by the Beaufort County Traditional Music Association, proved popular during its first run in 2009.

“It was a great series when it ran a few years ago and we knew when we were moving into the Turnage — that’s one of the first things we did was talk to BCTMA about bringing the series back,” said Joey Toler, executive director of the Beaufort County Arts Council.

For Toler, a ticket sold for the Pamlico Opry mean more for BCAC and the Turnage Theater than a night of music: it’s an introduction to more of the community.

“It’s a wonderful event to introduce a new audience to the theater,” Toler said. “It’s a way to grow and audience. I am always happy when someone who has never been here before comes in.”

The Outliers will be followed by Pamlico Opry performances by North Carolina guitar legends Edwards and Lawrence on July 26; Carolina Still on Aug. 8; After Jack on Aug. 23; John Dee Holeman and Lightnin’ Wells on Sept. 13; and The Barefoot Movement on Sept. 27.

“I sure hope folks will come,” Cuthrell said. “This is a great lineup of talent.”

Tickets are $10 per show for adults and $5 for children 12 years old and under. Shows start at 8 p.m.
