Community wide shredding Saturday

Local Government Federal Credit Union is hosting “Shred and Protect” on Saturday at the Washington waterfront. The shredding event will be held in conjunction with Saturday Market.

From 9 a.m. until noon, Super Shred, a Greenville-based company, will be on hand to shred any papers area residents bring to the community-sponsored event.

Super Shred only shreds paper, and stapled documents can be left intact, according to Shane Golden, a business development assistant with the company.

“We want to help people to have the best way to get rid of confidential documents that they would have,” Golden said. “Just basically things that people can use against them.”

“This is a good way to protect yourself from identity theft. You can bring all of your personal documents and records,” said Beth Byrd, Washington Harbor District Alliance director. “It will be shredded at no cost to anybody.”

The shredding will take place in the parking lot across the street from Saturday Market, near the Coldwell Banker on West Main Street.

Members of the community coming to the shredder are limited to 75 pounds worth of paper. There will be no questions asked about the documents brought to shred.

“Just bring it, they’ll shred it, you’re done,” said William Pitt, Washington city councilman. “If you live work, shop and play in Washington everybody is welcome.”

People coming to the shredding event can drive their vehicles into the parking lot and Super Shred employees will throw delivered paper into the shredder.

Golden said the company is allowing people to watch their documents go into the shredder to verify that they were shredded.

“We’re always open to anybody that has a project going to come out to the Saturday Market to use that format to promote what they are doing,” Byrd said. “The ‘Shred and Protect’ fit right in.”
