Voter registration drive on Friday

On Friday, Metropolitan Community Health Services in Washington is hosting an open voters registration from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

With the primaries coming to a close Tuesday night, midterm election season is now in full swing. There is, however, still time to register to vote before the general election on Nov. 4.

The voter registration drive is part of the process in registering for the Affordable Care Act. MCHS has been federally funded to register individuals in Beaufort and surrounding counties, according to Claudia Stokes, Affordable Care Act outreach enrollment coordinator for Beaufort and Martin counties.

“We are required by law to do voter registration,” Stokes said. “What better way to reach folks? There are a lot of people we service that have low income and are below poverty level.”

Those signing up for the ACA, who don’t wish to vote must fill out a declining to vote form.

“We are nonpartisan, we just do the registrations and update registration,” Stokes said. “We’re looking to have a little bit of fun with this.”

Voter registration deadline in North Carolina is 25 days before the general election. Forms received by mail must be postmarked before the registration deadline. To register, a person must be a citizen of the United States and 18 years old by Election Day.

“We have sent out a lot of emails to all of our email contacts, letters to churches and other nonprofit organizations,” Stokes said. “If people don’t come, we’re going to go door-to-door.”

North Carolina has 6,525,195 registered voters, which includes 32,221 voters in Beaufort County, according to Kellie Hopkins, director of Beaufort County Board of Elections.

Metropolitan Community Health Services is located at 328 N. Market St., near downtown Washington.
