City council to meet Monday

The second Washington City Council meeting of July is scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. inside the Municipal Building.
Prior to the meeting, the city will honor five area softball teams that competed this summer. Two of the teams honored are the 8U and 12U squads that were Southeast Regional Tournament runners-ups.
One item City Council is scheduled to adopt is an $11,366 grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, which will survey and analyze obstructions near the runways at Warren Field Airport.
The council will also vote on whether to approve the purchase of a van, truck, leaf blower and generators by the city because the items are each over $20,000. City officials will also discuss a number of grant and project updates as well.
To help the City Council stay updated with city business, Washington City Manager Brian Aliigood began putting together itemized updates in the council agendas.
“We put this together a few months ago that way it keeps everybody honest,” Alligood said. “They see it every month and forces our folks to take a look at it every month.
“That’s where they track this and we list out where the project stands on an individual grant update page that talks about revenues and what’s expended, what was budgeted so all that information is in there.”
Alligood is scheduled to give an update on Jack’s Creek, which was requested by Councilman Bobby Roberson at the last meeting on July 14.
“It’s an update on how we managed that pumping-wise where we are with the vegetation issues with the fish that were put in there,” Alligood said.
Alligood said, last year the city was trying combat an issue with algae and they tried to figure out a way to control that by spraying and putting in grass eating carp.
