Destination, Beaufort County: MITS turns downtown Washington into concert stage

Downtown Washington’s monthly street festival continues Friday with the latest installment of Music in the Streets.
The local tradition is now in its 12th season, according to coordinator Beth Byrd, executive director of the Washington Harbor District Alliance. WHDA hosts the event, along with Taylor’s Hospital Pharmacy.
MITS offers a little something to appeal to diverse tastes, mixing gospel, bluegrass and country music with rock, alternative rock and jazz.
“We try to run the gamut so there’s something for everybody,” said Byrd, who added that most of the acts hail from right here in Beaufort County. “Since we are in our 12th year it’s pretty well known among musicians that we invite them to come out and participate.”
MITS is held the third Friday evening of each month, from May through October. Although a few music slots are open for September’s event, Byrd noted that some acts have already booked performance space for the 2015 season. Several local acts who are making a name for themselves on the music scene got their start at MITS.
“Some of our performers are already well known locally, but others who are just starting out use this as a promotional opportunity,” Byrd said. “The musicians giving of their time and going down there to play for the crowds is what makes MITS happen.”
The remaining MITS events for this season are set for this Friday, along with Sept. 19 and Oct. 17. September’s theme will be “Flashback Friday.” MITS will feature a classic car show that evening, according to Byrd, and music from the 1950s and 1960s will be highlighted. Organizers are also kicking around the idea of incorporating a costume contest into the festivities, with participants decked out in their finest outfits representing the mid-20th century.
Along with WHDA and Tayloe’s, others supporting MITS each month include Coldwell Banker Coastal Rivers Realty, Washington Daily News, PotashCorp Aurora, Bud Light, First South Bank, Lee Chevrolet, On the Waterfront, Zaxby’s, Pepsi, Down on Mainstreet, Sloan Insurance Agency and Stewart’s Jewelry Store.
