COMMUNITY GARDEN: There is a plot of ground close to the airport that supports a community garden. Anyone may rent a plot in order to grow produce. It is a beautiful spot to relax after work, to see plants grow, and to experience fresh vegetables. Peter Omonde grew a 60-pound pumpkin on his plot. Many pumpkin pies were enjoyed by his family from this one pumpkin. Peter also grows tomatoes, corn, collard greens, onions, beans, squash, and of course pumpkins. If you are not sure you have a “green thumb” do not worry, Master Gardeners are close by to answer any questions you may have. They are only a phone call away. The North Carolina Extension Office is across the street to help you with soil samples. Please try your luck and enjoy the “fruits’ of your labor by growing your own fresh vegetables.
